Warehouse Laborer - Job Description
Big Sky Steel and Salvage is looking for a scrap yard laborer to join our team. This position involves the following tasks:
- Provide customer service to assist suppliers with the unloading, weighing and staging of incoming materials
- Must have or be willing to learn basic knowledge of steel, stainless, aluminum, copper and brass materials.
- Inspect, evaluate, weigh and separate incoming materials using the scale and purchasing software to grade incoming material per proper commodity and obtain accurate weights.
- Receive unprocessed materials and sort, separate, and upgrade the materials properly by grade, inventory, type and family to specification.
- Communicate with supervisor, customers and other employees through effective verbal, written, and/or radio communication.
- Maintain work area and equipment in a safe and clean condition at all times.
- Process cars for scrap by draining fluid, removing aluminum wheels and tires, batteries and removing the catalytic converter
- Meet and exceed department quotas for processing and sorting commodities in an organized manner
- Keep scale area, warehouse and yard clean and free from hazards
- Utilize torch to cut iron into smaller pieces for processing
- Operate the following equipment, alligator shear, baler, plasma cutter, material handling equipment, torch, skidsteer, forklift, loader, and various hand tools (experience a plus but we can train)
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving equipment and machinery; scrap, materials, outside weather conditions, and all different types of terrain. The employee is required to wear protective eyeware, gloves, safety vest, hard hat, fall protection, and hearing protection when needed.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to sit, stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and frequently lift various weighted items throughout the day.
- Must be able to multitask and diverge time and energy effectively in fast paced environments
- We cross train across departments so other tasks and duties will be added as the employee masters their primary job
- Must be able to work Monday-Friday 8-5 and 1 Saturday per month and have reliable transportation
